Hello, Hockey Zone!
After receiving feedback from the community, Iโm excited to announce a major adjustment to how Veteran Points (VP) rankings will work for goalies in the upcoming MSHL season. This change ensures that goalies who want to play as skaters wonโt be unfairly restricted by their VP cost. Below you will find more details on how this will work.
The Issue: Why Did This Change Need to Happen?
Many goalies in MSHL enjoy playing outside of the net and were looking forward to participating as skaters. However, under the original VP system, goalies were assigned a single VP ranking based on their goalie performance. This created an issue where high-ranked goalies were considered too costly for captains to roster unless they played in net.
The concern from these players was:
โIf I want to play out as a skater instead of a goalie, should I still be ranked the same way?โ
And they had a point. A top-tier goalie (3VP) might only be a low-tier skater (1VP) or even a non-veteran skater (0VP)โyet their high VP ranking as a goalie would force them to be a goalie, limiting roster flexibility. Captains would prefer them in net as their high cost would often times mean that they were acquired for that specific role.
The Solution: Two Separate Rankings for Goalies & Skaters
After discussing this issue with the MSHL panel, we reached a consensus: Goalies will now have two distinct VP rankingsโone for when they play as a goalie and another for when they play as a skater (any non-goalie position).
- If a goalie wants to play in net, their goalie VP ranking applies.
- If a goalie wants to play as a skater, their skater VP ranking applies.
How This Helps Captains & Teams
This change gives captains more flexibility when building their teams. For example:
๐น A 3VP goalie who isnโt great at skating but wants to play out can choose to be 1VP or 0VP skater instead, making room for another person on the roster to take the net.
๐น If a captain already has a solid goalie but still wants to recruit a skilled player who happens to be a goalie, they can sign that player as a skater insteadโwithout paying for their high goalie VP cost.
Where to See Updated Rankings
Both the Availability Players Sheet and the Vet Rankings Sheet have been updated to reflect this change. If you were previously worried about your ranking, go check out the updated lists!
Final Thoughts
This change ensures that MSHL remains fun, flexible, and competitive while giving every goalie an equal opportunity to participate without unfair VP restrictions.
I appreciate everyone who provided feedback, and I hope this adjustment makes MSHL even better for everyone!
๐ See you all on the ice! ๐
